About Us
The St. Louis Produce Market, Inc. is a real estate holding company providing facility and management services to the stockholders and lessees of the corporation.
The "Market" consists of a thirty (30) acre site with two main buildings: The buildings are 1,235 feet long, 114 feet wide, 150 feet apart, two stories high and contain a total of 98 units, with 2,000 sq. ft. of floor space within each unit.
The "Market" operators, for the most part, own stock in the corporation and lease their units from the corporation. The corporation provides all the services to the operators that deal with the common grounds of the Market, the areas outside of the individual units. The services include waste disposal, snow removal, area lighting, security services, real estate taxes, property and building structural repairs, roof repairs and replacement, plus any other item dealing with the physical property.
Operators on the "Market" range in size from one (1) unit to thirty-six (36) units, with the most common size being six (6) units;about 12,000 sq. ft. The unit operators make various alterations and improvements within their units at their own expense. The improvements satisfy each individual's needs and varying methods of operations. The most noticeable improvements are in refrigerated space and ripening rooms.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) maintains an office on the "Market" for statistical data collection and inspection services for the incoming produce. National produce brokerage companies, food service operators, produce wholesalers, specialty wholesale produce operators, food processing, produce packaging operations and cold storage operators all are present on the "Market''.
Today, the "Market" operators provide produce for an area 350 miles around St. Louis, to 4 ½ million people, servicing supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, hotels, schools, nursing homes, convenience stores, farmer markets and roadside produce stands, to bring the world's best and freshest fruit and vegetables to your table.
Produce arrives by tractor trailers and rail car, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, from 49 states and more than 76 foreign countries.
